STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Oral Roberts baseball team took the first of three games this season against Oklahoma State, defeating the Cowboys 10-9 in a nearly four-hour contest Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the first, as
Makani Tanaka put two runs on the board with a homer over the right field wall, driving in
Will Edmunson, who had reached on a fielding error.
Oklahoma State responded with a home run of its own in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run as ORU's defense turned a double play to erase runners on first and second.
The Cowboys leveled the score at 2-2 in the third with a home run to right-center. ORU responded in the following frame to regain the advantage.
Cooper Kelly opened the inning by reaching on a hit-by-pitch, and
Hudson Ellis drew a walk. Edmunson followed, reaching on a fielding error that allowed Kelly to score from second.
OSU took a brief 5-3 lead in the bottom of the inning, first scoring on an RBI single before adding a two-run homer to left.
The Golden Eagles responded quickly with a three-run top of the fifth. The inning began with an RBI single by Davis, scoring
Wailele Kane-Yates, who had reached on a walk. Kelly then doubled down the left field line to move Davis into scoring position.
Ethan Fender drove in both runners with a single to left, giving ORU a one-run advantage.
After a scoreless sixth, OSU tied the game at six in the seventh on an error. ORU answered with two runs in the top of the eighth to take an 8-6 lead. Dudding opened the inning with a no-doubt homer to left, putting ORU back in front, 7-6. Ellis and Edmunson followed with singles, setting up Tanaka's third RBI of the night to extend the lead to 8-6.
The Cowboys evened the game again in the bottom of the inning, first scoring on a sacrifice fly before a runner crossed home on a wild pitch.
ORU plated its final two runs in the top of the ninth, as Kelly doubled and Dudding drew a walk before both were driven in on a double to center field by Ellis.
The Cowboys opened the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot to left center, but the Golden Eagles' defense held firm to secure the 10-9 victory.
Kash Ferris (1-2) earned the win after throwing 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Jack Hill picked up his fourth save of the season, tossing the final inning and striking out one batter.
Noah Wech (2-4) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
