TULSA, Oklahoma – Oral Roberts men's soccer head coach
Ryan Bush has announced updates to his coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season.
Sergio Romero and
Edgardo Mira have been promoted to assistant coaches, while former goalkeeper
Joao Mesquita will serve as a graduate assistant.
Romero enters his second season with the Golden Eagles after previously serving as a graduate assistant during the 2025 season. He brings six seasons of playing experience to Oral Roberts, including three undefeated seasons at Richland College (2019-2021), where he was a three-time national champion, an All-American, and a two-time team captain. Romero transferred to the University of Tulsa ahead of the 2022 season. While at TU, Romero was part of a Sweet 16 appearance and a No. 2 national ranking, earning All-Conference recognition.
"I am excited about Sergio's promotion within the ORU Men's Soccer program," said Bush. "Throughout his tenure, he has elevated the culture of our program and consistently demonstrated that he is ready to help take ORU Men's Soccer to another level. Sergio brings tremendous positive energy, professionalism, and leadership to our environment, and his experience winning multiple national championships while in America gives him a championship mindset that will greatly impact our players and staff. We believe Sergio will play a major role in helping us pursue the standards and vision we have established for the future of this program."
Romero earned a bachelor's degree in finance and administration from the University of Tulsa in 2024 and is currently working to complete a master's degree in sports management at Oral Roberts.
Mira has deep ties to Oral Roberts, playing under Bush from 2012 to 2015. While at ORU, Mira was a member of the 2014 and 2015 All-Summit League First Team, the 2015 All-Tournament Team, and served as a team captain during his senior season. Mira went on to play professionally from 2016-2024 in Guatemala and El Salvador. He also appeared for the El Salvador national football team from 2017-2021.
Mira was a volunteer coach with the Golden Eagles women's soccer program from fall 2024 through the summer of 2025 before serving as the men's program's graduate assistant sport performance coach ahead of the 2025 season.
"Edgardo is an obvious promotion within our culture and program. As one of the most decorated players in ORU history, along with extensive First Division professional experience around the world, he brings tremendous knowledge, professionalism, and credibility to our staff as Director of Player Development," said Bush. "He understands the culture, has won championships here, and will help reinforce the high standards and championship mentality we want throughout our program."
Mira earned a bachelor's of science in health and exercise science from Oral Roberts in 2016, and a master's of sports management in 2016.
Former Golden Eagles goalkeeper Mesquita will return to ORU as a graduate assistant for the program. Mesquita came to ORU in 2023 after two seasons at Western Texas College. In two seasons, Mesquita appeared in 24 games for the Golden Eagles, making 22 starts and logging more than 2,000 minutes of play. In 2025, Mesquita was named the Summit League Defensive Peak Performer of the Week after tallying nine saves against Massachusetts Amherst. He led the league with 3.90 saves per game and was named a 2025 All-Summit League honorable mention selection and to the league's All-Academic Team.
"
Joao Mesquita had a tremendous career at ORU and now returns to serve in an operational and video analysis role within the program," explained Bush. "Joao is extremely organized, professional, and detail-oriented, and he understands both the culture of ORU Men's Soccer and what it takes to compete at the highest level. I am extremely excited for him to join our staff, as he will elevate every area of the program he touches and continue investing into the future of ORU Men's Soccer."
Remaining on the coaching staff are assistant coach
John Woodhead, who was promoted ahead of the 2025 season after serving as a graduate assistant, and volunteer
Xander Quiroga.
