Jackson Farrell threw five hitless innings as the Oral Roberts baseball team defeated St. Thomas 4-2 Sunday afternoon, securing the program's second series sweep over the Tommies this season.
Farrell (3-1) earned the win after starting on the mound for the Golden Eagles. The lefthander put in 5.0 innings of work, allowing no runs or hits while striking out four Tommies.
Maddox Thornton (S, 5) earned his second consecutive save of the series, throwing the final inning, allowing on run while recording one strikeout.
Oral Roberts was the first on the board as
Cooper Kelly put a solo homer into left in the second.
The Golden Eagles continued in the fourth, as
Ethan Fender reached on an error then advanced to third as Kelly got to second on an error.
Matthew Mainord was walked to load the bases for Ellis to reach on a fielder's choice that allowed Fender to score.
ORU added another run in the fifth, as
Makani Tanaka opened the frame with a triple to right.
Wailele Kane-Yates and
Cooper Combs both drew walks to load the bases.
Martell Davis reached on a fielder's choice to get Tanaka out at home, but the run scored as the Tommies' third baseman overthrew home, tallying their third error of the afternoon.
ORU's final run came in the eighth. Kelly opened the inning drawing a walk, advancing to third as Mainord reached first on a throwing error after laying down a sacrifice bunt. Kelly was driven in as
Will Edmunson reached on an error.
UST put up two runs on the afternoon, first scoring on an RBI double in the sixth, then on a single in the ninth.
Tommies starter Sam Stockman was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 6.2 innings on the mound.
