KANSAS CITY - The Oral Roberts women's soccer team opened Summit League conference play with a 1-1 draw against Kansas City on Thursday night at Durwood Soccer Stadium. The result moves Oral Roberts to 6-1-3 overall.
Kansas City struck first, catching the Golden Eagles on a counterattack in the 6th minute as Olivia Orosco buried her first goal of the season off assists from Mia Urosevich and Kaitlyn Edwards. Oral Roberts answered quickly, as Brianna Castleberry leveled the match in the 18th minute with her ninth goal of the season, an unassisted strike off a 25-yard cross. Genesis Helsely was credited with the assist, her fifth of the season.
The match stayed level from there despite ORU dominating the run of play. The Golden Eagles controlled 64% possession and out-shot the Roos 14-9, including a lopsided 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, but couldn't find a second breakthrough. Castleberry led the offensive push with seven shots and four on target, testing UMKC repeatedly in the second half without success.
Alyson Sebban made three saves in goal for Oral Roberts, while Anika Patton was busy on the other end, turning away nine shots to help Kansas City escape with the road point.
