Spokane, Wash.- The Golden Eagles returned to action on the second day of the Gonzaga Volleyball Invitational, taking on host Gonzaga University.
Oral Roberts came out strong in the opening set, claiming a 25-22 victory. Cortnee Smith led the Golden Eagles' attack with nine kills while hitting .500 in the first set. ORU continued its momentum in the second set, with Ciara Cunningham posting a .529 hitting percentage as the Golden Eagles took another set, 25-21. The Golden Eagles kept the match close, ultimately falling short by three points, 25-22. After dropping the fourth set, 25-20, ORU headed to a decisive fifth set. The Golden Eagles battled to a 15-12 victory in the final frame, securing a 3-2 match win over the tournament host.
Smith reached a season milestone during the match, recording her 100th kill of the season while adding 50 digs.
Ana Appel recorded her third double-double of the season, finishing with 40 assists and 13 digs. She also set a new career best with seven service aces in the match.
