Wade Mason begins his fourth season as an assistant coach with the ORU men’s basketball team, having joined the staff on May 8, 2012. His main responsibilities include scouting, game preparation, on-court instruction, recruiting and working with the guards.
In three seasons with the Golden Eagles, Mason has helped ORU garner seven all-conference nods, including a first team, and all defensive team selection in Shawn Glover in 2013-14. Glover finished the season with a 21.3 points per game average, the first ORU player since AP All-American Caleb Green to average more than 20 points per game, and scored 703 points, the third most for a single season in ORU history.
In 2012-13, Mason's tutelage helped Warren Niles to first team all-conference and first team all-district honors.
In Mason’s first season on the ORU sidelines, he helped the Golden Eagles earn their first postseason victory since the 1974-75 season (at UT Arlington). ORU went on to advance to the third round of the CIT, finishing the season with a 20-15 record.
Following his first year at ORU, Mason was named the top assistant coach in the Southland Conference by Next Up Recruits.
Mason is a native of New Orleans, La., and arrived in Tulsa after one season with the University of Oklahoma, where he worked with Coach Lon Kruger as a graduate assistant.
As a player, Mason played for the 1995 USA Today National Champion St. Augustine High School, then spent two seasons at Tyler Junior College, helping them earn the top national ranking during the 1996-97 season. He finished his playing career at Tulane University, helping the Green Wave to a Conference USA Division Championship and a berth in the NIT.
Mason earned a bachelor’s degree in media arts and business studies from Tulane in 2001. He has a daughter, Jaila, and a son, Wade III. His cousin, Robert Pack, is an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
