TULSA, Okla. Oral Roberts
University men's soccer team prolonged their season by defeating
Oakland, 2-0, on goals from Juan Chang (Guatemala
City, Guatemala) and Jorge Davila (Dallas, Texas),
on Saturday night at the ORU Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half, ORU's
(6-8-3, 3-3-0 Mid Con) freshman forward Chang scored the
game-winning goal off a corner kick from Miguel
Peralta (Tulsa, Okla.). Chang's goal, which came in the
63rd minute, was his team-leading ninth of the year and second
game-winner.
ORU did not cling on to the
one-goal lead but came right back when Davila and Carlos
Pinto (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) paired together to make it a
2-0 match. Receiving the ball at midfield, Davila passed to Pinto
who eventually gave it back to the streaking Davila. Davila
one-timed it past Oakland's goalkeeper Steve Clark.
Carlos Veron
(St.Asuncion, Paraguay) earned his fourth shutout of the year after
stopping all four of the Golden Grizzlies shots. Oakland came close
to getting on the board in the 88th minute, an OU forward's shot
beat Veron, but an ORU defender kicked the ball away before it
crossed the goal line.
Oakland's Steve Clark had five
saves in the match after facing 19 shots from the Golden Eagles.
Oakland finished their year 5-12-1 and 2-4-0 in league play.
Despite leading on the scoreboard,
ORU also led in corner kicks (13-3) and shots (19-17).
The Golden Eagles advanced to the
Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. ORU will face second-seeded
UMKC on Friday at a to-be-determined time. The tournament is being
hosted by Oakland.
