TULSA - The Oral Roberts
University women's basketball team found out why Western Illinois
is the only undefeated team in The Summit League, falling to the
Westerwinds 60-46 in ORU's first home game since December 21. With
the win, Western Illinois (8-9, 6-0 Summit League) takes sole
possession of first-place in The Summit League.
ORU (10-7, 4-2 Summit
League) was led by junior Mariana
Camargo's 13 points, while junior Jenny
Hardin finished the game with 12 points and six
rebounds.
Western Illinois' Gina Hugelier led
all scorers with a game-high 19 points as well as grabbing 10
boards to record her second double-double of the season. Amanda
Walker and Stephanie Lovingood also scored in double-digits for the
Westerwinds with 13 and 12 respectively.
The Westerwinds shot 45.7
percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range, while
ORU made only 15 of 52 shots for a 28.8 percent field-goal
average.
Both teams would trade
baskets in the opening minutes of the game with Western Illinois
holding the early advantage with a Gina Hugelier layup and
Stephanie Lovingood jumper, opening with an 8-4 lead at the 16:55
mark.
The Golden Eagles would take
their first lead of the game at the 15-minute mark with a Mariana
Camargo jumper, but WIU's Amanda Walker would head right back
to the other end to hit a jumper of her own to regain the 12-11
lead. The Westerwinds' Hugelier would nail her first three of the
game to give WIU the largest lead of the game, 15-11, but ORU's Kelly
Kindell would come right back to knock down in a trey to get
the Golden Eagles back within one.
ORU would take its first
lead of the game with back-to-back Janae
Voelker free-throws and then take its largest lead of the game,
18-15. Western's Lindsey Wutt would regain the one-point lead with
a jumper at the nine-minute mark to make it the fourth lead-change
of the game. ORU would go on a 5-0 run to take the lead with a
Whitney Wehymeyer layup and free-throw, 27-24, with 3:44 left in
the first.
With seconds ticking off the
clock, WIU's Amanda Walker would find the open three with four
seconds left in the first half to regain the 31-27 lead at the
break.
Both teams would trade
baskets early in the second half until Western would score
four-straight points to extend its lead to six, the largest of the
game, 37-31 with 14:30 left to play. WIU would hold ORU scoreless
for the next seven minutes until Mariana
Camargo would find the easy layup at the 11:38 mark to get back
within four.
The Westerwinds would start
to pull away from the Golden Eagles, taking the 41-33 lead, but ORU
would not give up quite so easily, chipping away at WIU's lead with
a Camargo layup. Western's Jordon O'Brien would hit a three from
the top of the key to extend their lead to 12, the largest lead of
the game.
Western Illinois
would never look
back, outscoring ORU down the stretch to keep their perfect Summit
League record in tact, winning 60-46.
The Golden Eagles will wrap
up its two-game home swing on Monday night with a 7 p.m. match-up
with IUPUI.
