The Basics
Score: Oral Roberts 1 – No. 21 DBU 3
Records: ORU (5-9, 0-0 SL) – DBU (10-4, 0-0 MVC)
Location: Dallas, Texas (Horner Ballpark)
DALLAS, Texas – Caleb Denny hit a solo home run giving the Oral Roberts baseball team an early lead, but No. 21 DBU came back to score the final three runs in a 3-1 setback Saturday at Horner Ballpark.
The redshirt freshman put the Golden Eagles on the board in the top of the second lifting a solo shot to left field for the first home run of his collegiate career. Anthony Martinez pulled a double to left and Ryan Cash drew a walk putting runners on the corners before the Patriots ended the threat with ORU in front, 1-0.
James Notary kept the DBU offense at bay facing one over the minimum until the home side hit a solo homer to even the score, 1-1, with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. ORU had a chance to break the tie in the sixth as Riley Keizor and Isaac Coffey each hit one-out singles and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. The Patriots bullpen stopped the visitors opportunity to keep the game deadlocked.
In the seventh, Jordan Wiley doubled down the line in right putting two runners in scoring position before DBU came up with a strikeout to hold off the threat. The Patriots flipped the momentum opening the bottom half of the frame on a single and double and took the lead on a sacrifice fly. DBU added a bases-loaded walk to push the margin to 3-1.
ORU had chances in the final frames sending the potential tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth only to have the Patriots close out the game.
The Golden Eagles more than doubled the hit total of DBU, 11-5, but left 12 runners on base, including nine in scoring position throughout the contest.
Turning Point
After the Golden Eagles put a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh, the DBU defense held through getting the final out of the frame. The Patriots turned the defense into offense and capitalized on a single and double to open the seventh before scoring on a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk for a two-run cushion.
