OMAHA, Neb. – The unconscious shooting of
Max Abmas and inside presence of
Kevin Obanor helped the Oral Roberts men's basketball team storm past Omaha, 86-75, Sunday on the road at Baxter Arena.
In a game with 11 ties and six lead changes, the Golden Eagles overcame an early deficit and finished off a perfect weekend to start Summit League action thanks to a stretch of shooting in the second half of nine-straight made field goals.
ORU fell behind 9-2 in the first two minutes, but the visitors were able to fight back and get within one, 13-12, as
Carlos Jürgens connected from the outside as the hot shooting from Saturday took longer to get going in the weekend finale. Omaha made another run at the mid-point of the half stretching its lead to eight, 22-14, only to have the Golden Eagles respond with a 10-1 run over the next three minutes capped on an Abmas triple giving ORU a 24-23 advantage.
The lead went back-and-forth until the Mavericks were able to build a 37-32 cushion with 1:54 to play in the opening frame. ORU dominated the final minutes scoring the next seven points for a 39-37 edge at halftime and Obanor added the first basket of the second stanza closing a 9-0 run.
The next five points went to Omaha and the lead switched three times in a three-minute span before the home side pushed to a six-point margin, 49-43. The Golden Eagles continued to ramp up the intensity as Abmas and Obanor scored all 11 points during an 11-3 spurt to jump in front, 56-54, halfway through the frame. It was all ORU after the Mavericks briefly tied the game as a
Kareem Thompson 3-pointer kick-started a 14-4 stretch for a 10-point edge with less than seven minutes to play.
Another Abmas shot from distance gave the Golden Eagles a 73-61 lead, but Omaha scored 11 of the next 13 points to make things interesting down the stretch closing the gap to three. Obanor provided the dagger hitting a wide-open 3-pointer from the corner and impressive free-throw shooting by ORU sealed the road win. Obanor and
RJ Glasper combined to knock down eight-straight attempts in the closing minutes for the 86-75 victory.
Turning Point
ORU stopped Omaha in the middle stages of the second half and turned momentum in its favor moving a six-point deficit into a double-digit lead. The Golden Eagles were on fire for nearly seven minutes making nine-consecutive field goals, including five from downtown, from the 12:56 mark until 6:00 and only missed one free throw in that stretch.
