TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team hits the road for its next two Summit League matches traveling to Macomb, Illinois, to battle the Fighting Leathernecks of Western Illinois Feb. 7 and 8.
OPENING SERVE
•ORU plays its first Summit League series away from home with two contests at Western Illinois. The Golden Eagles are still in search of their first win this season after falling to North Dakota twice at home last weekend.
•Libero
Sarah Thiessen leads the league totaling 78 digs in four matches reaching double figures in every outing, including two, 20+ dig efforts. The redshirt junior is fourth in the conference averaging 4.6 digs per set helping the team rank 34th nationally at 17.2 per set.
•The Golden Eagles have four players with at least 30 kills led by
Kaia Dunford's 44.
Jeslyn Spencer (39),
Aixa Vigil (34) and
Jaxie Wakley (33) join that group pacing the offense.
•Vigil had a breakout debut against the Fighting Hawks as the junior college transfer tallied double-doubles in both matches and leads the team averaging 3.4 kills per set. Monday, she became the first ORU player with 20 or more kills and digs in a match since Laura Milos had 32 kills and 25 digs against Stephen F. Austin in 2016. The performance was the first by a NCAA player during the spring season.
•ORU's setting duo of
Sylvia Lawson (5.2 per set) and
Bryanne Soares (4.6 per set) have combined for 149 set assists. Lawson has tallied double-digit assists in all four matches, while Soares has two outings with at least 20 assists in her freshman campaign.
•WIU was swept in straight sets at South Dakota State in both of its matches to begin league play. Mariah Mitchell has put away a team-leading 35 kills to pace five Leathernecks with double-figure kills. Gabby DePersio has tallied 48 digs in 10 sets leading the WIU defense.
•ORU was predicted to finish seventh in The Summit League standings following a quarterfinal exit at last year's conference championships.
•Head Coach
Frank Craig III added six players in his first recruiting class with the Golden Eagles as four freshmen and two junior college transfers joined the program.
Kaia Dunford (Waimanalo, Hawaii),
Chloe Salcedo (Garland, Texas),
Bryanne Soares (Kapolei, Hawaii) and
Jaxie Wakley (Broken Arrow, Oklahoma) enter the collegiate ranks for the first time.
Rami Mose (Compton, California) and
Aixa Vigil (Surquillo, Peru) made the move to ORU after starting in junior college.
