OMAHA, Neb. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team closed its season Saturday evening suffering a three-set loss at Omaha (20-25, 22-25, 11-25) inside Baxter Arena.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first three points and fell behind early, 5-1, and the margin swelled to 12-5 before the visitors stormed back with a 7-0 run to even the frame forcing the Mavericks into attack errors. ORU was never able to jump in front of Omaha and dropped the opening set, 25-20.
The second stanza began similar to the first for the Golden Eagles as the Mavericks built a 10-5 cushion until
Jaxie Wakley and
Aixa Vigil combined for two kills and a block pulling within two, 10-8. Back-to-back errors by Omaha helped ORU take a 13-12 lead and the advantage traded sides twice. The Golden Eagles fought back from a three-point deficit on a 4-0 burst for an 18-17 lead, but the Mavericks scored the next three points and closed the frame, 25-22.
Omaha tallied 12 of the first 14 points in the third set as ORU could not stop the home side's momentum. The Golden Eagles continued to see their comeback chance slip away with the Mavericks pushing to a 25-11 set win securing the match.
Inside the Box Score
- For the second-straight night, ORU libero Sarah Thiessen posted at least 20 digs as the redshirt junior finished with a match-best 22.
- Vigil was the only Golden Eagle to reach double-digit kills tallying 10 and completed the double-double with 10 digs.
- Bryanne Soares and Sylvia Lawson totaled 27 set assists recording 15 and 12, respectively.
- Chloe Salcedo and Kaia Dunford each posted nine digs.
- Dunford (7), Wakley (6) and Victoria Mayes (5) aided ORU's offense with 18 kills.
