BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Oral Roberts baseball team swept their Thursday doubleheader over South Dakota State to extend their winning streak to eight games.
ORU despite scoring first in game one, the Golden Eagles fell behind early by a score of 5-1. The Golden Eagles got a run in the first with a single to right center by
Jordan Wiley. In the bottom half of the inning, South Dakota State scored five runs, highlighted by a grand slam.
The Golden Eagles added three runs in the third inning to bring the game within a run.
Blake Hall got the scoring going with a two-run double to score
Ryan Cash and
Joshua Cox. Hall managed to steal home for the third run of the inning on a double steal with
Hunter Swift. In the bottom half of the third, the Jackrabbits got a run back on a solo shot to right center.
Between the fourth and seventh innings, ORU posted five unanswered runs to reclaim the lead.
Alec Jones lead off the fourth inning with a home run to center field to cut the deficit to one.
In the sixth inning, Cox tied the game with a single back up the middle to score Jones.
Jake McMurray gave ORU a two-run lead with a single to right to score Cox and
Anthony Martinez. In the seventh, Martinez extended the lead to three with a double which scored Jones.
South Dakota State cut the deficit to just a run in the eighth inning before
Adam Scoggins came on to pitch for ORU. Scoggins picked up the five-out save – his seventh save of the season.
ORU got some insurance runs in the ninth when
Hunter Swift hit a solo home run to right center field and Martinez roped a single to left center to score
Adam Oviedo.
In the second game,
Isaac Coffey carried a perfect game into the fourth inning and a no-hitter into the fifth. The sophomore picked up his Summit League best ninth win of the season, tossing 5.0 innings and fanning five in the process.
Cox opened the scoring in the third inning when he reached on a fielder's choice. On that play, Martinez advanced to second base on a throwing error and came all the way around to score. Cash put a second run on the board with a sacrifice fly to score Cox.
In the fifth inning, South Dakota State got a pair of runs back to tie the game at two.
The Golden Eagles responded in the sixth inning when Cash had a two-run single to right field to score Martinez and
Brody Gibson.
The Jackrabbits got a run back in the bottom half of the sixth and threatened for more before
Matt Gaskins found his groove. Gaskins tossed the final two innings, allowing one run and striking out two.
With two wins on Thursday, ORU pushed their winning streak to eight games and 13 of their last 14 games.
Game One Turning Point
Adam Scoggins came in with one out in the eighth inning to pick up a five-out save. Scoggins stranded both runners he inherited in the eighth and did not allow a run in the ninth.
Game Two Turning Point
With two outs in the sixth inning,
Ryan Cash roped a single into right field that scored a pair of runs and put the Golden Eagles on top by a score of 4-2.

- Coffey carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a lead-off double.
- Coffey picked up his Summit League leading ninth win of the season.

- Despite Coffey's no-hit bid, the Golden Eagles were outhit by South Dakota State.
- Ryan Cash was the only player with multiple hits in the ballgame.
