TULSA, Okla. – Forty minutes was not enough time to find a winner as the Oral Roberts women's basketball team and the Denver Pioneers went to overtime on Saturday afternoon. When the dust settled, the Pioneers came out victorious 69-64 in the Summit League showdown.
After a back and forth start, the Pioneers went on a 7-0 run to jump out to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter.
Katie Scott snapped the scoring drought for the Golden Eagles with 1:12 left to go in the quarter. As time expired on the frame, Denver knocked down a buzzer beater in the paint to push their lead back to eight.
Tirzah Moore scored each of the first five points in the second quarter to bring ORU back within three. Following a lay-up from Denver, the Golden Eagles rattled off seven straight points to cap off a 12-3 run and take an 18-17 lead. Just before the break, Denver rattled off a 6-0 run before
Tirzah Moore connected on a layup to cut the Pioneer lead to four.
For the first four minutes of the second half, Denver and ORU traded baskets before the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run to tie the game, highlighted by three-pointers from Scott and
Hannah Cooper. The Pioneers knocked down a pair of triples of their own before the end of the quarter to push their lead back to four points.
Trailing by six with less than 3:30 to play, the Golden Eagles never lost faith and continued to press on. After a
Tirzah Moore layup, the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to one when Cooper knocked down a triple with an assist from Scott. With 1:18 to play, Scott tied the game at the free throw line after splitting a pair. After a Denver turnover, Scott gave ORU the lead with 36 seconds left following a feed from
Delaney Nix. The Pioneers knocked down a pair of free throws with 24 seconds in regulation to tie the game and force overtime.
The overtime frame was tightly contested until the final minute. A Denver long ball with 1:02 gave the Pioneers a four-point lead before ORU split a pair at the charity stripe with 30 ticks left. In the final 30 seconds, Denver went 6-6 at the free throw line and ended the game on a 6-2 run with
Keni Jo Lippe providing ORU's lone bucket.
THE LEADERS
Oral Roberts:
Tirzah Moore notched her third career double-double and her second double-double against the Pioneers this season with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Katie Scott added 16 points and nine rebounds of her own in the ballgame.
Denver: Meghan Boyd had the hot hand for the Pioneers and finished with a game-high 27 points. Makayla Minett led the rebounding efforts for Denver, finishing with eight.
