SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The 2022 Summit League individual women's soccer awards were spread out among three teams as those honors along with the all-league and all-newcomer teams were announced Thursday by league officials.
The Golden Eagles had six honorees with three being named Honorable Mention and three All-Newcomer. The group of players earning an honorable mention were highlighted by a trio of Golden Eagles as defender
Gabrielle Abbey, midfielder
Samantha Guzman and forward
Julia Thasaphong helped ORU earn the program's most wins in a season (9) since 2017. Abbey led the back line all season and earned Defensive Peak Performer for her efforts (Oct. 10). Guzman finished the regular season scoring the fourth most goals in the league as well as fourth in shots on goal. Thasaphong was fifth in the league in points and third in game-winning goals with three.
Thasaphong earned a spot on the all-newcomer team and was joined by fellow Golden Eagles
Ariana Fresquez and
Abril Lucio to give ORU a league-high three members on the squad. Frequez, a freshman, came to ORU from Arizona and played in 16 games and had a .500 shot on goal percentage. Lucio played in all 19 games and captured three goals with two assists for a total of eight points. She scored the game winning goal at home against North Dakota State. Thasaphong made 15 starts and scored five goals with four assists for 14 points. She scored game winning goals against Texas A&M Commerce, Mid America Christian and North Dakota, all at home.
The six-team, single-elimination tournament will feature two quarterfinal matches on Friday, Oct. 28, and two semifinal contests on Sunday, Oct. 30 with the championship game being played on Saturday, Nov. 5 at the highest remaining seed's home field.
In Friday's opening quarterfinal, No. 4 Oral Roberts plays No. 5 North Dakota State in Denver at 4 p.m. MT. The other quarterfinal will be played in Brookings between No. 3 Omaha taking on No. 6 North Dakota at 6 p.m. CT. The winner of Friday's first match will take on top-seeded Denver at 1 p.m. MT on Sunday, Oct. 30 in the first of two semifinal matches. The other semifinal contest will pit No. 2 seed South Dakota State against the winner of Friday's No. 3 vs. No. 6 contest at 3 p.m. CT.
