#ORUMBB Shuts Down Texas Southern Tuesday

HOUSTON – The Oral Roberts men's basketball team defeated preseason SWAC favorite Texas Southern, 82-64, Tuesday evening at H&PE Arena in Houston, Texas.  
 
Four Golden Eagles scored in double-digits Tuesday evening with two recording double-doubles. Kareem Thompson and Connor Vanover earned their first double-doubles of the season with Thompson scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while Vanover scored 14 and pulled down 13 boards. Two-time All-American Max Abmas led ORU with 15 points along with DeShang Weaver.
 
The first half was even between the Summit League and SWAC preseason favorites. Texas Southern jumped out to a quick four point advantage. After playing from behind early, ORU was able to tie the game with 12:50 left in the first. The Tigers then managed to take a five point lead with five minutes before the break. A quick 7-0 run by ORU changed that in just two minutes. However, TSU came back and the teams were tied 38-38 at the half. Both teams shot 40 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
 
After falling by four with nine minutes to play in the second, ORU shut down the Tigers in the final eight minutes. Defensively, the Golden Eagles out-rebounded TSU by 10 and held the Tigers to 2-for-17 from the field and 1-for-8 from three-point range. ORU did not allow TSU a free-throw in the second half. Weaver scored all 15 of his points in the second and nine came in the final eight minutes. Weaver's eight points were a highlight of the 23-5 run put together by ORU as the Golden Eagles shot 63 percent to close out the game, 82-64.
 
ORU had its best rebounding game of the season pulling down a total of 47 with 15 being on the offensive end, the most in the first four games. The offensive rebounds led to 19 second chance points. ORU has had four or more players score in double-figures in three of its four games this season.  

Individual Leaders
Oral Roberts: Abmas led with 15 points along with Weaver while Thompson and Vanover each had a double-double.

Texas Southern: Davon Barnes scored 19 points and Grayson Carter grabbed 10 boards.

Inside the Box Score
- ORU shot 34.6 percent from the three-point line going 9-for-26.
 
- ORU shot 45.8 percent from the field.

- The Golden Eagles had 15 assists on 33 made baskets.

- ORU forced TSU to seven turnovers and only committed eight.
 
News and Notes
- Abmas has scored 1,869 career points which puts him 10th all-time in the ORU history book.
 
- Vanover has 16 blocks on the season and continues to lead the nation in total blocks and blocks per game.

- It was the first time since the 2019-20 season ORU had two players record a double-double in a game.

- For the third game this season ORU had four or more players score in double-digits.
