#ORUVB Drops Road Contest at Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. – The Oral Roberts volleyball team dropped their fifth straight match Saturday afternoon as they fell on the road to Omaha in straight sets (23-25, 19-25, 26-28) inside Baxter Arena.

Setter Bryanne Soares registered her fifth double-double of the season in the contest after dishing out a match-high 32 assists and scooping up a team-high tying 12 digs. Kaia Dunford paced the ORU attack as the junior finished with a match-high tying 13 kills.

Leading 9-7 in the opening set, the Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run to push their advantage to six, 13-7. The Mavericks responded with an 8-0 run to jump back in front 15-13. Facing a 20-19 deficit, ORU used a 3-0 run sparked by a Sakira LaCour kill to regain the lead, 22-20. Out of an Omaha timeout, the Mavericks used a 5-1 stretch to claim the set, 25-23. 

In the second stanza, Omaha jumped out to a 4-1 start. The Golden Eagles battle back to even the score at 11-11, following a 4-0 run. The Mavericks answered with a 10-1 stretch to jump back in front 21-12. Despite scoring seven of the final 11 points, the Golden Eagles dropped the second set, 25-19.

With the score even at 7-7 in the third, ORU opened a 12-8 lead following a 5-1 run. The Mavericks jumped in front for the first time in the stanza, 20-19, behind a 4-1 surge. The two sides alternated the next 13 points before Omaha claimed the set, 28-26, and match with a kill and service ace.

Match Notes

  • Saturday's match marked the 23rd meeting all-time and second this season between ORU and Omaha.
  • Trinity Freeman and LaCour contributed offensively with nine and eight kills, respectively. 
  • Freeman also added 12 digs in the contest.
  • Natassia Baptiste registered a team-high five blocks.
  • Soares double-double was the 25th of her career.
