SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Oral Roberts baseball team evened its three-game set against Texas State with a 6-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.
Harley Gollert picked up his second win of the season after allowing three runs over five solid innings of work. The senior also struck out five Bobcats on the day. In relief, Dalton Patten tossed two no-hit innings and struck out three, while Cade Denton recorded the save with two scoreless frames and three punchouts.
Offensively, Blaze Brothers led the charge for ORU as the senior finished 2-for-4 at the dish with a home run and two RBIs. Jonah Cox and Jacob Godman contributed with a game-best three hits apiece on the afternoon.Â
After the Bobcats jumped in front with a solo home run in the first, Brothers responded for ORU with a solo blast in the second to level the score at 1-1. The homer was the senior's first of his Golden Eagle career.
Brothers extended the ORU advantage, 2-1, in the fourth with an infield RBI single that plated Sam Thompson. The Golden Eagles later increased their lead, 4-1, in the frame courtesy of a pair of Bobcat errors.
In the fifth, the Bobcats trimmed the deficit to 4-3 with a two-run homer to left. Later in the inning, Texas State looked to have tied the game off the bat of Ben McClain but Matt Hogan made a leaping catch at the wall to keep the Golden Eagles in front.
Jonah Cox added to the ORU lead, 5-3, in the seventh with an infield RBI single that brought home Jake McMurray. Drew Stahl plated another insurance run for the Golden Eagles in the ninth as the junior ripped an RBI double to left-center to score McMurray.
In the bottom half of the ninth, Denton struck out the side to slam the door shut as ORU went on to win 6-3.
