TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts baseball team improved to 11-0 in Summit League play with a 12-6 victory over Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon from J.L. Johnson Stadium. With the win, the Golden Eagles claimed their fifth straight series and have now won a season-best six consecutive games.
Harley Gollert notched the win on the mound after striking out seven over 5.1Â innings of work. Closer Cade Denton picked up his League-leading ninth save of the season after tossing three scoreless frames to go along with three strikeouts.Â
Redshirt senior Mac McCroskey went deep for the fifth time in his last five contests and finished the day 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and two RBI. For the second straight game, Justin Quinn went 3-for-4 at the dish with an RBI. The senior's three hits were tied for a game-best.
After the Bears struck first in the opening frame with a solo homer off the bat of Austin Bunn, the Golden Eagles quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to jump in front, 3-1. A sacrifice fly from Matt Hogan plated Quinn, who reached on a bunt single, to even the game at 1-1. Two pitches later, McCroskey put ORU in front with a two-run homer to left.Â
A hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth allowed Northern Colorado to trim the deficit to one, 3-2, with only one out. Gollert neutralized the threat with a pop-up in foul territory followed by a strikeout.Â
In the bottom half of the frame, the Golden Eagles scored five runs to stretch their advantage to 8-2. Breeze sparked the big inning with a two-run blast to left-center that traveled 405 feet. The long ball marked the fifth of the season for the redshirt junior. In the frame, Jake McMurray, Jonah Cox and Hogan each recorded an RBI.
The Bears battled back with four runs in the sixth as the ORU lead was cut to 8-6.
In the eighth, the Golden Eagles put the game away for good with four more runs as they went on to claim the series with a 12-6 victory. McMurray and Quinn each registered RBI singles in the frame and Cox picked up an RBI groundout, which plated McMurray. Quinn scored the final run of the afternoon on a wild pitch.
