TULSA, Okla. – The No. 24 Oral Roberts baseball team rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat No. 16 Oklahoma State, 9-7, in front of a crowd of 2,000-plus Tuesday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium. With the win, the Golden Eagles secured the season sweep of the Cowboys and have won 12 of the last 15 meetings.Â
Trailing 5-3 in the seventh, Drew Stahl led off the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot off the left-field foul pole to pull ORU to within one. Following a one-out single by Jacob Godman and a walk from Blaze Brothers, Jake McMurray, the reigning Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week, put the Golden Eagles in front, 7-5, with a three-run homer down the right-field line. The long ball marked the fifth in the last four games for the Tulsa, Oklahoma, native.
After Dalton Patten struck out the first two batters he faced in the eighth, Brothers made a leaping catch at the wall to rob a home run to keep ORU in front, 7-5. In the bottom half of the frame, ORU added insurance as Godman ripped a two-run double down the left-field line to extend the Golden Eagle advantage to 9-5.
The Cowboys pushed across two runs in the ninth to trim the lead to 9-7 and brought the tying run to the plate but closer Cade Denton put an end to the threat with a flyout to seal the come-from-behind victory.Â
On the mound, Jacob Widener picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief. Patten worked a scoreless frame and struck out two, while Caleb Isaacs punched out five in three innings.Â
The Cowboys opened the scoring, 1-0, in the second behind a sacrifice fly from Jaxson Crull. In the frame, starter Joshua Caravalho limited the damage after loading the bases with no outs.Â
OSU tacked on two more runs to its lead, 3-0, in the third courtesy of a two-run homer off the bat of Roc Riggio. A balk plated the fourth run of the night for the Cowboys in the fourth and Riggio hit his second homer of the game, a solo shot to left-center, in the fifth as their lead grew to 5-0.Â
Shortstop Mac McCroskey put ORU on the board in the sixth with a solo homer to right-center. The long ball marked the 13th of the season for the redshirt sophomore and his second in as many games.Â
In the sixth, the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with only one out and Cox came through with a two-run single through the left side to trim the deficit to 5-3. The two-run single extended the junior's hit streak to 28 games.Â
