Madison, Wis. – Abraham Chelangam of Oral Roberts Cross Country put the finishing touches on a remarkable debut campaign at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Saturday. Competing on the challenging course at the University of Wisconsin's Thomas Zimmer Championship Course, Chelangam held his own against the nation's elite, delivering another standout performance.
Chelangam's Historic Nationals Debut
Chelangam placed 89th overall in the field of 255 of the nation's best runners, clocking a time of 29:51.0 over the grueling 10K distance. His finish is the highest by a Golden Eagle at the NCAA Championships since 2009 and marked the fastest 10K time by an ORU athlete at the championship meet in program history.
Battling a tightly packed field and cold Midwest conditions, Chelangam demonstrated the poise and speed that defined his breakout season. The performance capped a campaign that included three school records, a top-five regional finish, and a return to the national stage for ORU.
"Abraham represented ORU with pride and tenacity on the biggest stage," said Head Coach Alick Musukuma. "To compete with the best in the country and deliver a performance like this is a testament to his talent and work ethic. This is just the beginning of what he can accomplish."
Chelangam's Season of Firsts
Chelangam's 2024 season will be remembered as one of the greatest in ORU Cross Country history:
- First ORU runner to qualify for nationals since 2009.
- Highest Midwest Regional finish in program history (5th).
- School records in the 6K, 8K, and 10K distances.
- Set the Summit League Cross Country Championship Course and Meet Record
- First ORU athlete to win the Summit League Cross Country Title since 2008
- Earned All-Region Distinction by the USTFCCCA
- Became the first ORU athlete to be named USTFCCCA Athlete of the Week
