Hudson Ellis led the Oral Roberts baseball team to a 9-2 win in game one of a three-game series at Abilene Christian on Friday afternoon.
Ellis racked up four hits in five at-bats, including a double, tallying three RBI.
Cooper Kelly also chipped in for Oral Roberts, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk. Joining in the extra-base hitting were
Martell Davis with a double and two RBI, and
Cooper Combs with a home run.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the second, as Davis reached on a hit-by-pitch and was driven home by an Ellis double. A 390-foot solo homer by Combs made it 2-0 in the top of the third.
ACU cut the advantage to one run with a one-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, but the Golden Eagles' defense held strong and did not allow another run in the inning.
ORU responded with a three-run fifth inning that began with Kelly singling before stealing second and advancing to third on a catcher's throwing error.
Makani Tanaka drew a walk, and both runners were driven in on a double to left by Davis.
Ethan Fender added an RBI single to left to score Davis.
An RBI single by Tanaka extended the advantage to five runs in the sixth before the Golden Eagles added another three-run inning in the seventh. ORU's second three-run frame began as
Keaton Campbell and Fender reached on singles, moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. Ellis drove both runners home with a single to left center. He stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch and later scored on another wild pitch, giving ORU an eight-run cushion with two and a half innings to go.
The Wildcats added the final run of the day in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single.
Easton Teel (1-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Oral Roberts. The right-hander went five innings, allowing one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Jack Hill also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Eagles, throwing three innings and allowing one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
