TULSA, Oklahoma – The Oral Roberts baseball team opened Summit League play with a 4-3 win over South Dakota State on Friday evening.
SDSU opened the scoring in the third, plating a run on a fielder's choice, but the Golden Eagles were quick to respond with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Makani Tanaka added the first run for the Golden Eagles with a 390-foot solo homer over the left-center wall.
Cooper Combs followed by drawing a walk and advanced to second on a
Wailele Kane-Yates bunt single before being driven in on a
Cooper Kelly single following a pitching change.
The Jackrabbits leveled the score at 2-2 in the fifth, scoring on a sacrifice fly.
The game remained scoreless until the eighth when ORU put two more runs on the board. The inning began with Kane-Yates being hit by a pitch and advancing to second on a Kelly sacrifice bunt before moving to third on a single by
Martell Davis. Kane-Yates scored on a single by
Tyler Brodrick, moving Davis into scoring position. Both runners advanced on a groundout before Davis scored on a wild pitch with
Nate Nichols at bat.
SDSU added a run in the ninth with two runners in scoring position but was unable to drive in another as the Golden Eagles picked off the runner on first for the final out of the evening.
Jack Hill (2-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for Oral Roberts. The right-hander went two innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Easton Teel started the ballgame and went seven innings, surrendering two runs, one earned, on two hits while walking one and striking out four.
Jackrabbits reliever Drew McDowell (0-1) was charged with the loss after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
