TULSA, Oklahoma – The Oral Roberts baseball team opened Summit League play with a series sweep over South Dakota State after walking off the Jackrabbits in an eight-inning game Sunday afternoon.
Tyler Brodrick,
Keaton Campbell and
Martell Davis each racked up three hits to help lead ORU over South Dakota State, 12-2.
Brodrick went three-for-three at the plate with a double, a walk and three RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles. Davis added an RBI to his three-hit performance as well. Campbell put together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and two RBIs.
SDSU struck first with a home run in the second, but the Golden Eagles leveled the score at 1-1 as
Keaton Campbell sent a solo homer 384 feet over the left-field wall in the fifth.
The Jackrabbits regained the advantage with another home run in the sixth, but ORU was quick to respond with three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Golden Eagles' scoring started when
Wailele Kane-Yates hit a triple to drive in
Cooper Kelly from first. Brodrick then singled into left field to score Kane-Yates before advancing to second on a passed ball and to third on a single by Davis. Brodrick later capped the scoring in the inning, coming home on a fielder's choice.
The Golden Eagles extended their advantage to 8-2 in the seventh as
Cooper Combs and Kane-Yates each recorded RBI doubles, followed by a Brodrick RBI single. Brodrick later advanced to third on a Davis single and scored on a groundout to give ORU a six-run lead.
ORU ended the game early with four runs in the eighth, starting with Combs,
Ethan Fender and Kane-Yates loading the bases after being hit by pitches. Brodrick lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Combs, while Davis singled to drive in Fender and move Kane-Yates into scoring position.
Kole Dudding entered to pinch hit and drove in Kane-Yates before Campbell delivered a walk-off RBI single into left field to score Davis, giving the Golden Eagles a 10-run advantage and ending the game via the run rule.
Weston Rouse (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Oral Roberts. The left-hander went three innings, giving up one run on two hits while allowing two walks and striking out five.
Conner Johnson also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Eagles, starting the ballgame and throwing four innings, giving up one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
SDSU starter Sam Novotny (1-2) was charged with the loss after throwing 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks.
