TULSA, Oklahoma – After a seven-run second inning, which included a grand slam from senior catcher
Wailele Kane-Yates, the Oral Roberts baseball team defeated St. Thomas 11-3 on Sunday afternoon. With the result, the Golden Eagles secured their second series sweep in Summit League play.
Kane-Yates finished the day with five RBI, while
Martell Davis and
Hudson Ellis drove in two runs apiece. Davis went 3-for-4, scoring two runs, while Ellis went 2-for-4 with one run scored.
The Tommies opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first, but ORU quickly responded in the bottom of the inning as Kane-Yates hit an RBI groundout to score Tanaka, who had reached on a single and advanced on a wild pitch and a
Cooper Kelly sacrifice bunt.
The Golden Eagles' seven-run second inning began when
Cooper Combs reached on a single.
Tyler Brodrick followed with a single to drive in Combs and advanced to second on the throw home. Ellis then singled to score Brodrick, making it 3-1.
ORU continued the rally at the top of the lineup as Tanaka was hit by a pitch and Kelly drew a walk to load the bases. Kane-Yates then launched a 343-foot grand slam to left field, giving the Golden Eagles a six-run lead. Both teams added a run in the third inning.
The Tommies scored on a sacrifice fly in the top half, while Davis hit a 358-foot solo home run over the left-field wall in the bottom half.
UST added a solo home run to right field to cut the deficit to five, but ORU responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to eight.
The fifth-inning scoring began when
Will Edmunson singled and moved to third on a Combs double. Edmunson scored, and Combs advanced to third on a Davis single. The Golden Eagles reached double digits when Combs scored on a throwing error by the left fielder on a Brodrick flyout. Ellis capped the scoring with an RBI single to bring in Davis.
Jack Hill (3-0) earned the win out of the bullpen for ORU. The right-hander pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
UST starter Evan Esch was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work.
