Arlington, TX --Three players scored in
double-figures and Texas-Arlington held off Oral Roberts University
late for a 62-55 win, Tuesday at Texas Hall.
The loss drops ORU to 3-2 while the Mavericks improve to 2-3.
UTA led nearly the entire game, taking an early 9-2 on the strength
of three 3-pointers by Melissa Fairley. The Mavericks extended the
lead to as many as 12 points in the first half, but ORU twice cut
the lead to six points.
Trailing 31-23 at halftime, the Golden Eagles chipped away at the
lead to start the second half. Lean Cannon and April Garcia
combined to score nine points during a 15-3 ORU run as the Golden
Eagles took their only lead of the game when cannon's short jumper
made it 41-39 with 10:40 to play.
But the Golden Eagles couldn't take advantage of several UTA
miscues. The Mavericks, who came into the game shooting 76 percent
from the free throw line, made just four of 10 free throws in the
final 1:11, but the Golden Eagles scored just two points during
that span, a Cori Williston layup which cut the Maverick lead to
59-55 with 38 seconds to play.
Leah Cannon led ORU with 15 points, and Stephanie Clark added 13
points and nine boards. Williston, who came into the game averaging
17.3 points per game, scored eight and was only 3-of-10 from the
field.
Chronda Reagan led all scorers with 17 points for UTA, while
Krystal Buchanan and Fairley each scored 14.
The Golden Eagles take a 10-day break for final exams before
returning to action against Panhandle State, 7:05 p.m., Friday
December 13 at the Cooper Aerobics Center.
