Chicago, Ill. --Bridgette Kelly made four free
throws in the final 22 seconds as Chicago State defeated Oral
Roberts University 65-59 in the Mid-Continent Conference opener for
both teams, Saturday at the Dickenson Center.
The loss snapped ORU's seven game winning streak and drops the
Golden Eagles to 10-3. Chicago State improves to 4-8.
In what was a back-and-forth game from start to finish, Chicago
State held the final run, out-scoring ORU 11-4 over the game's
final five minutes. Krisey Sanders converted a key three-point play
with 40 seconds left to give CSU a 61-59 lead. ORU missed shot
opportunities on its next two possessions, forcing the Golden
Eagles to foul in the closing moments.
Down 30-27 at halftime, ORU started the second half with a 13-2
run, taking a 38-33 lead on April Garcia's 3-pointer with 17:07 to
play.
ORU maintained a one-to-five point lead until Chicago State's
Marverly Nettles hit a layup for a 54-53 Cougar lead with 5:13 to
play. ORU regained the lead following a pair of Cori Williston free
throws and a Stephanie Clark layup with 51 seconds to play, but
Sanders took the inbounds pass following a timeout and drove the
length of the court for the key play of the game.
Clark led ORU with 11 points, the only Golden Eagle to reach double
figures in scoring. ORU shot 45.5 percent for the game, but was
only 4-of-7 from the line, their second-lowest free throw attempt
total of the season.
Chicago State shot 51 percent for the game, including 60.9 percent
in the second half. Kelly finished with a game-high 22 points,
while Nettles had 16 and Kafayat Davies scored 12.

Utah, 8:05 p.m., Monday.
