Cedar City, UT --Three players scored in double
figures and Oral Roberts University shot 54.5 percent in the second
as the Golden Eagles defeated Southern Utah 66-49 in a
Mid-Continent Conference game, Monday at the Spectrum.
The win improves ORU to 11-3 and 1-1 in league play. Southern Utah
drops to 7-7 and 0-2.
Leading 29-25 at halftime, ORU opened the second half with a 10-2
run, taking a 39-27 lead on April Garcia's 3-pointer with 15:38
left. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 50-34 on a Leah Cannon
free throw and ORU never looked back.
The Golden Eagles were 12-of-22 from the field in the second half,
while holding the Thunderbirds to 22.2 percent shooting in the half
and 28.1 percent for the game, ORU's best defensive effort of the
season.
Cori Williston led ORU with 17 points, her first double-figure
scoring game since getting 12 against St. Gregory's on Dec. 30. She
was 7-of-12 from the field and hit three 3-pointers. garcia
recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and
12 rebounds while adding three steals and two blocks. Stephanie
Clark had 15 points, going 7-of-9 from the line.
Cyrita Warner led Southern Utah with 14 points.
ORU returns to action when it hosts Oakland, 2:05 p.m., Saturday at
the Mabee Center.
