Tulsa, Okla. --Leah Cannon scored a career-high 19
points to lead Oral Roberts to an 88-66 romp over Oakland in a
Mid-Continent Conference game, Saturday at the Mabee Center.
ORU (12-3 overall, 2-1 Mid-Con) led from nearly start to finish
over the defending league tournament champions. Oakland (4-10, 0-2)
lost its third straight game.
The Golden Grizzlies held a 16-15 edge with 9:03 left in the first
half before ORU closed with a 19-7 run for a 34-23 halftime
lead.
Oakland came out firing in the second half, trimming ORU's lead to
40-36 on Anne Hafeli's 3-pointer with 16:48 remaining. But again
ORU responded and quickly pushed the lead to 55-41 on a trey by
Cori Williston with 12:14 to play.
ORU's lead ballooned to as many as 23 points twice, the last coming
when Amanda Stone's 3-pointer made it 82-59 with 2:33 left.
Oakland lost despite shooting 64 percent in the second half and 50
percent for the game. ORU, which shot 49.2 percent for the game,
took advantage of Oakland's 19 turnovers, scoring 25 points off
Golden Grizzlies miscues. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, committed a
season-low 12 turnovers and shot a season-best 91.3 percent (21-23)
from the free throw line.
Cannon, a freshman guard, was 6-of-9 from the field and 7-of-8 from
the line, adding four assists and three rebounds. Stephanie Clark
scored 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, and Williston added 11 points.
Twelve Golden Eagles scored at least two points.
Hefeli led all scorers with 20 points for Oakland.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they host IUPUI, 7:05 p.m.,
Monday.
