Cannon (Adelaide, Australia) scored 16 points in the
second half and Oral Roberts was 24-of-32 from the free line in a
70-56 win over Texas State, Monday at Strahan Coliseum in ORU's
final non-conference game of the season.
Cannon, who normally leads
ORU's offense by distributing the ball, took on the offensive load
in the second half. The sophomore point guard was 7-of-13 from the
field in the second half, helping the Golden Eagles shoot 52
percent (13-25) from the floor in the final 20 minutes.
ORU (6-5) bolted to a 19-5
lead behind the 3-point shooting of Sarah Davidson (
New South
Wales, Australia), who nailed three
treys in the games first nine minutes. But the Bobcats (0-9) went
on a 25-12 run to close the half with ORU holding a 31-30
lead.
Texas State managed to take the lead
twice in the second half but couldn't hold it as Cannon began to
take over. After the Bobcats trimmed ORU's lead to 52-46
with 7:56 to play, Cannon made three
straight layups to give the Golden Eagles a 58-46 advantage
with 3:59 remaining. ORU then made
eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the
game.
Elisha
Turek (Council Bluffs, IA) was the only other Golden
Eagle in double figures with 14 points and a team-high nine
rebounds. ORU played the game without injured guards Cori Williston
(Tulsa, OK) and Buba Kovacevic
(Vrsac, Yugoslavia). Williston was
diagnosed with a stress fracture in her left femur over Christmas
break, while Kovacevic suffered a right knee injury in practice on
Dec. 26. Both are out indefinetly.
Tori Talbert paced
Texas
State
with 21 points
and 15 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles open
Mid-Continent Conference paly when they visit UMKC, 2:05 p.m.,
Saturday.
