TULSA--Elisha
Turek (Council Bluffs, Iowa) scored 19 points and grabbed
13 rebounds, and Leah Cannon (Adelaide, Australia)
tied the school season assists record as Oral Roberts University
defeated Oakland 70-63 in Mid-Continent Conference game, Saturday
at the Mabee Center.
The win snaps ORU's two-game skid
and improves the Golden Eagles to 12-12 overall and 6-7 in league
play. Oakland falls to 16-9 and 9-5.
Turek recorded her eighth
double-double of the season, making 7-of-15 shots from the field
including a key late 3-pointer which gave ORU a 65-57 lead with
1:34 to play. She then put ORU up by 10 points when her two free
throws gave the Golden Eagles a 67-67 lead with 1:18 left.
Cannon finished the game with 13
points and nine assists, giving her 180 for the season and tying
the ORU single-season assist record set by Nanette Ogden in
1987-88.
The Golden Eagles won despite
shooting 28.1 percent from the field in the second half. After
torching the nets at a 59.4 percent clip in the first half, ORU was
just 9-of-32 from the field in the final 20 minutes. But the Golden
Eagles limited Oakland to 23.5 percent shooting in the second half,
and 32.3 percent shooting for the game.
ORU also dominated the boards,
out-rebounding Oakland by a 47-34 margin.
Turek and Cannon were two of ORU's
four players to reach double figures in scoring. Alycia
Seay (Big Cabin, Okla.) had 13 points and 10 rebounds for
her first career double-double. Katie Langford
(Arthurton, Australia) added a career-high 10 points.
Anne Hafeli led Oakland with 25
points, while Jayme Wilson added 10.
The Golden Eagles return to action
when they host Chicago State, 7:05 p.m., Monday.
