TULSA--Leah Cannon (Adelaide, Australia) had 15
assists and became Oral Roberts University's single-season assists
leader in ORU's 75-52 win over Mid-Continent Conference foe Chicago
State, Monday at the Mabee center.
Cannon, who also finished with 13 points, surpassed Nanette
Ogden's mark of 180 assists which was set during the 1987-88
season. Cannon now has 195 assists and is closing in on the Mid-Con
mark of 204 set by Troy State's Trenda Robinson in 1996-97.
Four Golden Eagles (13-12, 7-7) scored in double-figures, with
freshman Alycia Seay (Big Cabin, Okla.) leading
the way with a career-high 20 points. Elisha Turek
(Council Bluffs, Iowa) scored 19 points and Claudia
Louis (Baton Rogue, La.) added 12 points in just 20
minutes.
Chicago State (7-18, 2-12) kept the game close through the first
10 minutes, trailing 14-12 with 10:28 left in the half. But ORU
closed the half on a 20-7 run, with Turek and Louis scoring six
points each during the streak, and giving the Golden Eagles a 34-19
lead at the break.
The Cougars threatened to make a game of it early in the second
half when Kafayat Davies' layup at 15:36 capped a 12-2 run which
pulled CSU to within 40-33. But again ORU responded, out-scoring
Chicago State 24-10 over the next 11 minutes for a 64-43 lead with
4:39 to play.
ORU sizzled from the field, shooting 57.4 percent from the floor
including 60.9 percent in the first half. The Golden Eagles defense
limited Chicago State to 39.2 percent shooting for the game and
forced the Cougars into 28 turnovers.
Renada Blackburn led CSU with 13 points, while Davies added
12.
The Golden Eagles close out the home portion of their 2003-04
schedule when they host Southern Utah, 2:05 p.m., Saturday at the
Mabee Center.
