TULSA--All five starters scored in
double figures and Oral Roberts University shot nearly 54 percent
from the field as the Golden Eagles rolled past IUPUI 89-65, in a
Mid-Continent Conference game Saturday at the Mabee Center.
The win snapped ORU's (11-10, 5-5)
three-game losing streak and avenged last month's 67-62 overtime
loss at IUPUI (6-15, 3-7).
The Golden Eagles shot 58.1 percent
in the first half and 53.7 percent for the game, ORU's best
shooting night in the last eight games. ORU's defense was strong as
well, turning 23 IUPUI turnovers into 31 points, and limiting the
Jaguars to 40 percent shooting.
Maureen Obudho
(Mombassa, Kenya) led ORU with
17 points. Leah Cannon (Adelaide, Australia) had
16 points and 11 assists, her fourth double-double of the season.
Elisha Turek (Council Bluffs, Iowa) and
Claudia Louis (Baton Rogue, La.) each scored 14
points, with Turek adding nine rebounds and four steals, and Louis
adding five assists. Alycia Seay (Big Cabin,
Okla.) scored 10 points and grabbed seven boards for the Golden
Eagles.
ORU bolted to an 18-5 lead to start
the game and after IUPUI cut it to 22-17 with 8:48 left in the
first half, the Golden Eagles pushed the lead back to double digits
at 28-17 on Cannon's three-pointer with 7:18 remaining before
halftime. ORU led 40-32 at the break.
The Golden Eagles never led by less
than nine points in the second half, and led by as many as 30
points when Sarah Davidson (New South Wales,
Australia) hit a pair of free throws for a 87-57 lead with 1:19 to
play.
The margin of victory was ORU's
largest over a Mid-Con foe since a 69-38 defeat of Chicago State on
Feb. 10, 2003. The 89 points is ORU's most in Mid-Con play since a
90-46 win over Chicago State on Jan. 24, 1998.
Natalie Hendricks led IUPUI with 14
points.
The Golden Eagles next visit
Western Illinois, 1 p.m., Saturday, February 14.
