TULSA, Okla. €" Elisha Turek
(Council Bluffs, Iowa)and Alycia Seay (Big Cabin,
Okla.) combined for 33 points and 20 rebounds in leading the Oral
Roberts University women's basketball team past a poor shooting
performance to defeat Southwestern Oklahoma State, 72-61, Wednesday
afternoon at the Mabee Center.
Turek finished the afternoon with game-highs of 19 points and 12
boards, recording her first double-double of the season and 29th of
her career. Seay chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds,
while shooting a team-high 57.1 percent (4-7) from the field.
As a team, ORU (2-1) shot just 25.1 percent from the floor on the
afternoon, including a dismal 18.2 percent from behind the
three-point line. Meanwhile, it was the Lady Bulldogs' (2-2) hot
shooting that kept things close throughout the entire contest, as
they connected on 51.2 percent of their attempts from the
field.
SWOSU came out hot early, hitting five straight buckets during a
9-1 run that gave them a 13-6 lead just over five minutes into the
contest. The Golden Eagles clawed their way back into the game with
an 11-3 spurt over the next 2:56, taking the lead back at 17-16.
Seay capped the run with pair of free throws and a three-point
basket that put ORU back in front.
The Lady Bulldogs refused to go away, however, answering the Golden
Eagles nearly basket-for-basket throughout the rest of the first
half. A Katie Langford (Arthurton, Australia)
offensive put back gave ORU a five-point lead, 28-23, at the 4:50
mark, but a quick 6-2 run by the visitors cut the deficit back to
one, 30-29.
With under 15 seconds remaining in the half, a Langford steal and
ensuing Leah Cannon (Adelaide, Australia) lay-up
gave the Golden Eagles their 32-39 halftime lead.
Langford would finish the day with six steals, as ORU racked up 27
points off 29 SWOSU turnovers.
The first seven minutes of the second stanza was more of the same,
as ORU held on to a slim one point lead, 42-41, after a pair of
lead changes and three ties.
The Golden Eagles finally gave themselves some breathing room when
a Turek bucket sparked a 11-0 run to put ORU ahead 53-41. The lead
would grow to 18 points, 70-52, before the Golden Eagles settled in
for the 72-61 win.
Andrea Oldham led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points, while Jule
Dawson had a double-double effort of 12 points and 10 boards.
Sarah Davidson (New South Wales, Australia) added
15 points for ORU.
The Golden Eagles will close out their three-game homestand by
welcoming Lamar to the Mabee Center on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 26,
at 2:05 p.m.
