TULSA, Okla. Oakland's Kristi
Evans scored on a penalty kick in the 13th minute, which proved to
be the game-winner, as the Golden Grizzlies defeated Oral Roberts
University, 2-0, on Saturday night at the ORU Soccer Complex.
ORU (3-8-3, 0-3-2 Mid-Con) could not
find the back of the net as they saw their chances to qualify for
the Mid-Continent Conference tournament dwindle. It was the first
defeat at home for the Golden Eagles.
Evans received the penalty kick
early in the match after ORU's Natalya Manyan (St. Andrew, Jamaica)
took down an OU player in the box for an automatic yellow card and
a penalty kick. OU's Evans' shot beat ORU's keeper Mandy Evans
(Cedar Rapids, Iowa) just inside the right post.
ORU went into halftime trailing 1-0
while Oakland held an advantage in shots, 10-6, and in corner
kicks, 2-0.
Oakland added another tally at the
49:14 mark with Kristi Tomczyk scoring her seventh goal of the
year.
The Golden Grizzlies out shot ORU
12-5 in the second frame. In all, they held a 22-11 advantage in
shots.
ORU's Evans came away with seven
saves on nine shots against. OU's keeper Kim Herbst earned the
shutout with four saves.
ORU returns to action next Friday
when they travel to Centenary for a 7 p.m. match.
