broke a 46-46 tie and Kia Hayes made a pair of free throws 10
seconds later to seal the game as IUPUI defeated Oral Roberts
University 50-46 in Mid-Continent Conference women's basketball
action, Saturday at IUPUI Gymnasium.
ORU dropped to 12-10
overall and 6-5 in Mid-Con play as its four-game winning streak
went by the boards. IUPUI improved to 14-8 and 9-3 in league
play.
A defensive battle
throughout, the game came down to free throw shooting. ORU was just
2-for-8 from the line in the second half, including misses on a
pair of he front ends of one-and-one opportunities.
ORU out-rebounded IUPUI
43-40, with Jenny
Hardin and Elisha Turek combining for
28 rebounds. But 32.7 percent shooting combined with a 5-of-13
night from the line helped lead to ORU's demise. IUPI shot just
35.1 percent for the game, but hit on 44 percent of its shots in
the second half.
With IUPUI leading
23-22 coming out of halftime, Hardin led ORU's comeback. The
freshman forward scored 11 of her team-high 13 points in the second
half and her 3-pointer with7:21 to play gave ORU a 41-39 lead, its
first advantage of the half. Hardin also finished with career-high
15 rebounds.
The Jaguars received
balanced scoring, getting 13 points from Hayes, 12 by Tanika Mays
and 10 points from Brooke McAfee, who was also credited with six
blocks.
The Golden Eagles
return to action when they host
Oakland, 7:05 p.m., Monday at the Mabee Center.
