TULSA, Okla. -- The Oral Roberts University women's basketball
team held Chicago State scoreless over the game's final 2:32 as the
Golden Eagles rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to top
the Cougars, 53-49, in front of 1,079 during Mid-Con action
Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center.
Elisha Turek (Council Bluffs, Iowa) led all
players with 19 points and nine rebounds, as ORU (11-9, 5-4) has
now won three straight in conference play. Turek's effort moved her
up the school's all-time scoring and rebounding lists, as she now
ranks 7th and 3rd, respectively.
The Cougars (8-12, 3-6) led by 10 points, 36-26, with less than
16:30 to play in the game, but Marianna Camargo
(Blumenau, Brazil) notched a pair of buckets on back-to-back Golden
Eagle possessions and the game's momentum began to swing back
towards the home squad.
Those two baskets began a 20-11 ORU run that spanned 13:30 as a
Turek jumper cut the Cougar lead to just one, 47-46, with 2:58
remaining. CSU's Tina Hill came right back with a jumper of her own
to extend the lead back to 49-46 at the 2:32 mark; but that's when
the Golden Eagles defense took over, as they held the visitors
scoreless the rest of the way.
After ORU pulled within 49-48, the Cougars missed the front end of
a one-and-one, and Camargo took the outlet pass the length of the
floor, hitting a twisting lay-up to give the Golden Eagles a 50-49
lead €" their first since being up 20-18 at the 4:42
mark of the first half.
Duygu Carkci missed an open look for CSU with :08 remaining, and
Rachel Watman (Sydney, Australia) was
intentionally fouled after collecting the defensive board. She hit
one of her two free throws, and then Leah Cannon
(Adelaide, Australia) received the ensuing inbounds pass and iced
the contest by knocking down both her freebies to give ORU a 53-49
lead with only :02 left in the game.
Camargo finished the night with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, while
Jenny Hardin (Claremore, Okla.) added 10 rebounds,
seven rebounds, and a block before fouling out with less than a
minute to play.
Chandra Timberlake led the Cougars with 12 points and six boards,
while Hill had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Monday night, as they host
Southern Utah at 7:05 p.m. at the Mabee Center.
