�€" Oral Roberts University women's soccer team tied
Southern Utah, 1-1, in their Mid-Continent Conference season opener
on Friday night at the ORU Soccer Complex.
The first frame was
scoreless as both teams fired off 17 shots. The Golden Eagles had
eight shots, with
Southern
Utah's
keeper Holly Davis making two saves. The Thunderbirds of SUU
countered with nine shots, while ORU's Shelbi Morrison
(Claremore, Okla.) recorded four
saves.
ORU had four corners to
SUU's zero.
The Golden Eagles broke the
scoreless match at the 51:49 mark when Tamara Waller (Sapulpa, Okla.) netted her second goal of
the year. She received a pass from Gentry Detter (Claremore, Okla.) and footed the ball past
SUU's Davis for a 1-0 ORU
lead.
SUU came right back to tie
the match at 1-1 with a goal from Brooklyn Phillips. Phillips
scored off a corner kick from Catherine Johnson.
Both teams had chances to
take the lead but both keepers came up big. ORU's Morrison had a
diving save on SUU's Dani Lavigne with 13 minutes left in
regulation time to keep the game scoreless.
In the first overtime both
teams traded shot-for-shot with both keepers recording two
saves.
The Golden Eagles forced
the pressure on the Thunderbirds in the second overtime, recording
four shots. Detter had a free kick at the 6:58 mark that hit the
crossbar.
Detter led both squads with
six shots. ORU's Melissa Weidman
(Tulsa, Okla.) had four shots coming off
the bench, and Waller and Amy Gharibvand
(Broken
Arrow, Okla.) recorded three
shots.
ORU out shot SUU 24-23 in
the match and also had a 12-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Southern Utah moved to 1-4-1 on the year and 0-0-1
in conference play.
With the tie, Oral Roberts
is 1-3-2 and 0-0-1 in Mid-Con play.
ORU will travel to Norman on Sunday to play
Oklahoma
at a
7:30
p.m. start time.
