CEDAR CITY,
Utah Shakira Duncan scored two goals as Oral Roberts
University took a 2-1 lead into the final minute but Southern
Utah's Catherine Johnson scored with 35 seconds left to tie the
match as ORU and SUU battled to a 2-2 tie, Friday night in Cedar
City.
With the tie ORU moves to (3-4-1, 0-0-1) on the year while SUU goes
to (1-2-3, 0-0-2).
Southern Utah grabbed an early lead on a Catherine Johnson goal in
the fifth minute with a blast from about 15 yards out. The goal
came at the 4:42 mark and was assisted by Erica Berlin.
SUU went into halftime with 1-0 lead, but the Golden Eagles had
their chances in the first frame with seven shots, three
on-goal.
The Golden Eagles came out in the second half and tied the match
just 11 minutes in. Duncan scored off a header from a cross from Marissa
Ranberger at the 55:37 mark.
Duncan put ORU on top for the first time in the game with a
breakaway goal in the 88th minute. Ranberger again assisted on
Duncan's team-leading and conference-leading seventh tally of the
year. The two goals by Duncan was the second time the freshman
forward has scored two goals in a game this season.
The Thunderbirds tied the match on a Johnson's second goal of the
night at the 89:25 mark. Johnson scored in heavy traffic after a
Southern Utah corner kick.
ORU's goalkeeper Stef Gurley finished with 10 saves while facing
30 shots. SUU's goalie Holly Senter blocked seven shots on 16 shots
by the Golden Eagles.
Ranberger and Tara Lomas had four shots each to lead the Golden
Eagle attack while Duncan and Lauren
Nievar fired off three shots each.
ORU returns home for a Tuesday match-up with cross-town rival Tulsa
at the ORU Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
