Oakland Serves ORU First Conference Loss, Fall 71-57

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - A quick-paced Oakland team proved to be too much for the Oral Roberts women's basketball team as the Grizzlies (11-4, 4-1 Summit League) defeated the Golden Eagles (9-6, 3-1 Summit League) 71-57 inside Oakland's O'Rena.

This is the first Summit League loss for the Golden Eagles this season and first loss in 2008.

Sophomore Janae Voelker finished with a team-high 17 points, while nearing a double-double with nine rebounds. Junior Mariana Camargo was the only other Golden Eagle in double-digits with 12 points as well as dishing out six assists.

Oakland's Jessica Pike posted her second-straight 18-point game, shooting 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Junior Riika Terava tacked on 12 points and five assists for OU, while junior April Kidd recorded 11 on the day.

Oakland jumped out to an early 7-2 lead aided by a three from Summit League Player of the Week Jessica Pike. Janae Voelker would start a 10-0 run with a layin and a trey to make it a four-point game at the 15:48 mark and would eventually tie the game with her second three of the game. Rachel Watman would nail a three from way out to give ORU its first lead of the game, 12-9 at the 15:43 mark.

The Golden Eagles would find out how quick the Grizzlies really were when OU would make an 12-0 run of its own, eight of those off of fastbreak points, to take the largest lead of the game, 21-12, at the 11 minute mark.

Both teams would battle back and forth for much of the next six minutes, with the Golden Eagles climbing back to within four of the Grizzlies, 28-24, with the help of a Kelly Kindell three-pointer and a three-point play by Jenny Hardin. OU would end the second half on a 11-1 run to give them the 39-25 advantage at the half.

Oakland would begin to run away from the Golden Eagles in the second half, opening on a 9-1 run with 15:50 left in the game to take the 48-30 lead and would eventually At the 7:46 mark, the Golden Eagles had only been able to put up 10 points since the halftime break, while OU had put up 20 in that span.

Oakland would open up its lead to 22 points with 8:37 left, but ORU would make an 11-4 run to cut the Grizzlies lead to 20 with 3:52 left in the game. The Golden Eagles would end the game on an 8-2 run with back-to-back trey's by Whitney Wehmeyer and Voelker. But it was not enough as ORU would fall to Oakland, 71-57.

The Golden Eagles take tomorrow off before returning to action on Monday evening as they battle IPFW in Fort Wayne, In., at 7 p.m.
