Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) scored a game-high
25 points to lead Oral Roberts University to an 82-58 win over John
Brown, Monday at Mabee Center.
ORU (1-1) picked up its first victory of the year, despite falling
into an early hole against John Brown (6-1). The NAIA Golden Eagles
made their first seven shots from the field and raced out to a
20-10 lead with 11:30 remaining in the first half.
Sparked by the play of freshman Beloved
Rogers (Baltimore, Md.), ORU got back in it. Rogers made a pair
of free throws and assisted on three consecutive baskets as ORU
pulled to within 20-18 on a jumper by Reggie
Guyton (Portland, Ore.) with 8:31 left in the half.
Jarvis tied the game at 20 with a short jumper at the 7:31 mark,
and
Kyron Stokes (Mansfield, Texas) followed with a
fast-break layup to give ORU its first lead of the night, 22-20,
with 6:53 before intermission.
ORU pushed the lead to 33-28 on a jumper by Jarvis with 2:49 left,
and a
Dominique Morrison (Kansas City, Mo.) bucket with
2:32 to go made it 35-28. Jarvis hit a baseline floater with 1:10
before halftime as ORU took a 37-28 lead into the break.
Marcus Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) converted a
layup less than two minutes into the second half to give ORU a
double-digit lead at 39-28. ORU never led by fewer than 13 points
after a Jarvis trey made it 42-28 with 17:23 left in the game.
Jarvis finished the night 10-of-17 from the field, including 3-of-7
from 3-point range, and 2-of-3 from the line. He also added five
assists and four rebounds.
Rogers enjoyed a strong all-round game, finishing with 11 points,
five assists, three steals and two rebounds in 19 minutes. Stokes
added 10 points and five boards.
Andrius Mikutis led John Brown with 12 points off the bench.
ORU limited JBU to 37.5 percent shooting (18-48), despite the hot
start. John Brown also committed 24 turnovers.
ORU enjoyed a 49.2-percent (31-63) shooting night, which included a
10-of-26 effort from 3-point range. ORU out-rebounded JBU, 35-33,
while handing out 18 assists and collecting nine steals.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit Creighton, 2:05
p.m., Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
