Golden Eagles Sweep Bearkats, 83-41, Monday Evening

TULSA, Okla. – Junior forward Janae Voelker (Newton, Kan.) and freshman forward Jordan Pyle (Mustang, Okla.) led the Oral Roberts women's basketball team to an 83-41 victory over Sam Houston State Saturday evening in the Mabee Center.

The Golden Eagles improved to 7-6 on the season, while the Bearkats fall to 2-9 overall. ORU is now 2-1 in the all-time series against SHSU.

Voelker posted her seventh double-double this season with 15 points and 15 rebounds and Pyle earned her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Voelker also added a career-high seven steals. Freshman guard Georgia Jones (Manchester, England) chipped in 14 points for ORU, while senior forward Monah Pegorari (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored 11 points and pulled down nine boards. Senior guard Mariana Camargo (Blumenau, Brazil) also added a season-high seven assists in the win.

ORU opened up with an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes of action with six points coming from freshman forward Cristal Turner (Maidstone, England) and six points from Voelker brought the Golden Eagles up to a 19-8 lead with 9:33 left in the first half. A jumper from Jones at 7:05 gave ORU its first 20-point lead, 29-8 and a Voelker three-pointer gave the Golden Eagles its largest lead of the first half, 39-11, with 2:55 to play. SHSU ended the half on an 11-5 run, as ORU took a 44-20 lead heading into the break.

The Bearkats scored four unanswered points at the beginning of the second half before the Golden Eagles responded with 13-0 run in the next three minutes to go up 57-24 with 14:58 left to go. ORU took its largest lead of the game with 7:52 left to play, 71-31, and led by no less than 34 points the rest of the game.

ORU shot 42.9 percent (33-77) from the field, including 40.9 percent (9-22) from three-point range and 80.0 percent (8-10) from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles out-rebounded the Bearkats, 59-39, while SHSU went to the free throw line 17 more times than the Golden Eagles.

SHSU shot 22.4 percent (13-58) from the field and 55.6 percent (15-27) from behind the charity stripe, as the Bearkats were 0-of-16 from behind the three-point arc.

ORU resumes conference action this weekend, hosting Centenary at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 in the Mabee Center.
