Golden Eagles Slip in Final Seconds to IUPUI, 69-66

INDIANAPOLIS - The Oral Roberts' women's basketball team (14-10, 8-5 Summit League) walked into the IUPUI gymnasium to redeem themselves after their 68-49 home loss to the Jaguars in January, but fell just short with a 69-66 setback to IUPUI (12-14 Summit League).

Junior Rachel Watman scored a team-high 15 points for the Golden Eagles, while junior Mariana Camargo finished with 14 points and four assists. Sophomore Janae Voelker posted her fourth double-double of the season, finishing the game with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman Leanne Robison was also in double-figures with 13 points on the night, shooting 50 percent from the field and the free-throw stripe.

IUPUI's Julia Whitted recorded her sixth double-double this season with a game-high 26 points and 14 boards, while junior Jernisha Cann also posted a double-double (10th of the season) with 21 points and 17 boards.

The Jaguars forced ORU to its second highest turnover game of the season with 22, while snagging 14 steals to the Golden Eagles' nine.

The Jaguars opened the game on a 10-4 run before Janae Voelker nailed a three-pointer to give the Jags only a three-point lead, 10-7. IUPUI extended that lead to 16-9, but the Golden Eagles sprinted to a 9-2 run to tie the game at 18-18. Demesha Heard's back-to-back free-throws gave ORU its first lead of the game, 20-18.

The Jaguars' Jernisha Cann scored six of IUPUI's next 10 points as the Jags went on a 13-4 scoring run to give them their biggest lead of the game, 31-22. But ORU didn't lie down, making it a game with four-straight points by Leanne Robison to get within one, 31-30. The Golden Eagles regained the lead at the 2:23 mark with a Heard layup, but IUPUI's Christina Cunningham's free-throw with 47 seconds left in the first half would send both teams to the locker room with a 34-34 score.

IUPUI came out from the break and scored four-straight points to regain the 38-34 lead, but ORU fought right back, outscoring the Jags 7-2 capped by Watman's first trey of the game to take the 43-42 lead.

The Golden Eagles held on to that lead for the next 10 minutes, until a Julia Whitted free-throw tied the game, 57-57. The lead switched three times in the span of a minute with IUPUI taking the one-point lead, but Robison's first career three-pointer at the 4:05 mark gave the Golden Eagles the 61-60 advantage.

ORU put five more points on the board before IUPUI would start a 7-0 run to take the 67-66 lead with nine seconds left after a Whitted free-throw. The Jags would seal the deal with a Brykeesha Tate free-throw to take the win and the series sweep, 69-66.

The Golden Eagles return to play on Monday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Macomb, Ill., to take on the Western Illinois Westerwinds.
