TULSA A season-high 68.8 percent
three-point field goal percentage provided a major boost for the
Oral Roberts University women's basketball team (13-9, 7-4 Summit
League) as the Golden Eagles defeated the Mastodons of IPFW 88-71
Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center.
Junior Mariana
Camargo came out hot from the start for ORU, scoring 10 of her
career-high 21 points in the first four minutes of the game. The
Blumenau, Brazil posted her third double-double of the season,
tying her career-high 10 assists with her 21 points and was near a
triple-double with eight rebounds.
Junior Rachel
Watman connected 4-of-5 from the three-point line, finishing
the game 6-of-8 from field-goal range to score 16 points. For the
third-straight game, sophomore Kelly
Kindell got the start and has scored a season or career-high
each game. Tonight was no different, scoring a career-high 15
points after going 5-of-8 from behind the three-point
line.
And for the first time in three games, junior
Jenny Hardin made an appearance after sitting out
to rest an injury. Hardin came out and scored 11 points and grabbed
six boards in the 17-point win.
The Mastodons' (9-15, 6-6 Summit League)
Johnna Lewis-Carlisle finished the game with 20 points and six
rebounds, while Natalie Roberts scored 12 points, eight of those
from the free-throw line.
As a team, ORU shot their best three-point
field-goal percentage of the season with 68.8 percent (11-16) and
held IPFW to only six trey's the entire game (6-27).
ORU opened up the game on a 10-0 run, holding
IPFW scoreless until the 15:44 mark. The Golden Eagles extended
their lead to 21 points after Kindell
and Hardin three's, 40-19.
The Golden Eagles really started to pull away
from the Dons at the 9:59 mark, kicked off by back-to-back
baskets by junior Demesha Heard to roll to a 45-27 halftime
lead.
IPFW battled in the second half, forcing ORU
to 14 of its 22 total turnovers. Both teams traded baskets early in
the second half, until the Dons would open a 7-2 scoring run,
started at the 15:04 mark with a Lewis-Carlisle 15-foot jumper to
get within 13. ORU responded with 12-straight points to regain the
comfortable 67-48 lead and would cruise to the 88-71
win.
Up next for the Golden Eagles is a Monday
night 7:05 p.m. matchup with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at the
Mabee Center.
