Robert Jarvis (Humble, Texas) scored 17
second-half points to help Oral Roberts University rally from a
seven-point halftime deficit for a 58-42 win over IPFW in the
Summit League Tournament semifinals, Monday at John Q. Hammons
Arena.
The win puts the Golden Eagles (23-8) into the finals for the
fourth straight year. No. 1 seed ORU will be seeking its third
straight tournament title and automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament.
Seeing his first action since suffering a high ankle sprain in the
final seconds of a Feb. 23 loss to Creighton, Jarvis jumped-started
a stagnant ORU offense and saved the day in the second half. His
three-pointer with 16:44 left pulled ORU within 30-26, and less
than a minute later he nailed another trey to make it 30-29 with 16
minutes to go.
But fifth-seeded IPFW (13-18) didn't bend much. The Mastodons
responded to Jarvis' flurry with an 8-1 run, gaining a 38-31
advantage on a jumper by Chris Perkins with 11:50 to go.
A basket and a pair of free throws by Shawn
King (Bequia, St. Vincent) made it 38-25, and a three-point
play by
Adam Liberty (Oklahoma City, Okla.) pulled ORU
within one at 39-28 with 8:49 left.
The Golden Eagles took their first lead of the at 7:17 on a layup
by
Marcus Lewis (Long Beach, Calif.) at 7:17, but
Demetrius Johnson tied it at 40 by making one of two free throws
just nine seconds later.
Following Johnson's free throw, the Golden Eagles held IPFW
scoreless for more than five minutes, allowing the offense to take
control for good.
Tied at 40, the Golden Eagles went on a 10-0 run, capped by a
Jarvis steal and breakaway layup to make it 50-40 with 2:20 left.
IPFW finally ended the drought on a jumper by DeWitt Scott at 2:10
as the Mastodons made it an 8-point game, 50-42.
But Jarvis and the ORU defense sealed the game in the final two
minutes. Jarvis scored five straight from the line for a 55-42 lead
with 1:16 left, and a steal and fast-break dunk by Kelvin
Sango (Tulsa, Okla.) gave ORU a 57-42 lead with less than a
minute to play. Sango added one free throw with 46 seconds left to
finish the scoring.
IPFW controlled play in the first half, leading by as many as 11
points (24-13) with 1:31 left in the half. Jarvis gave ORU a bit of
a spark in the final moments of the half, though, hitting a floater
in the lane with four seconds left to trim IPFW's lead to 24-17 at
the break.
Jarvis finished with a team-high 19 points, going 5-of-12 from the
field, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range. He was 6-of-8 from the
line, adding three rebounds, two steals, and two assists in 26
minutes.
King recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, also
swatting three shots. Lewis scored 12 points and grabbed seven
rebounds.
Burrows led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting. He
added 10 boards and three blocks, but was the only Mastodon in
double figures.
The Golden Eagles shot just 36.2 percent from the field and 59.1
percent (13-22) from the line, but limited IPFW to 34.7 percent
shooting while dominating the boards to the tune of a 45-30
advantage.
ORU faces either No.2 seed IUPUI or No. 3 seed Oakland in the
Summit League Tournament championship game, 6 p.m., Tuesday. The
game will be televised live on ESPN.
