TULSA
Moses Ehambe (Arlington, Texas) tied a tournament
record with eight three-pointers and Andre
Hardy (San Diego, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 18
points and 11 rebounds as No. 1 seed Oral Roberts University downed
Centenary, 84-56, in the Summit League Tournament quarterfinals on
Saturday at John Q. Hammons Arena.
The win puts the Golden Eagles (22-8) into the semifinals for the
fourth consecutive year. ORU gets Sunday off, and will face either
No. 4 Southern Utah or No. 5 IPFW in Monday's 6 p.m. semifinal
game.
Ehambe scored a game-high 27 points, going 8-of-15 from three-point
range and 3-for-3 from the line. He tied the record set by Western
Illinois' Andre Humphrey against Buffalo in 1995.
Hardy, used sparingly throughout much of the season until the last
three games, set career-high's in points and rebounds. He was
7-of-8 from the field and 4-of-10 from the line in 24 minutes.
Hardy entered the game averaging 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds.
Playing without injured guard and League Sixth Man of the Year Robert
Jarvis (Humble, Texas), as well as key reserve forward Marchello
Vealy (Oklahoma City, Okla.), the Golden Eagles figured to be
in a 40-minute battle. Instead, it was a virtual runaway.
Regular-season champion and No. 1 seed ORU led wire-to-wire in
securing their seventh straight tournament victory. The Golden
Eagles jumped out to a 12-2 advantage and stretched the lead to 17
points when Hardy scored five straight to make it 23-6 with 9:02 to
play. ORU settled for a 36-24 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles slowly extended their lead in the second half. A
three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Ehambe, and a layup by
Hardy gave ORU its first 20-point lead at 47-27 with 15:57 to
play.
After Centenary twice cut the lead down to 16 points, ORU moved to
put the Gents away. A jumper by Shawn
King (Bequia, St.Vincent), a trey by Ehambe and a pair of free
throws by
Kelvin Sango (Tulsa, Okla.) made it 63-40. The
lead reached 30 points when a free throw by Hardy made it 78-48
with 2:48 left.
The Golden Eagles shot 54.7 percent from the field, including 42.1
percent (8-19) from three-point range. ORU was 18-for-25 (72
percent) from the line. Centenary shot just 33.3 percent from the
field.
ORU dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Gents 40-24.
King joined Ehambe in Hardy in double-digits, scoring 14 points
with seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
Lance Hill led Centenary with 17 points, while Tyrone Hamilton
added 13.
