TULSA, Okla. Behind two 21-point efforts
from senior guard Mariana Camargo (Blumenau, Brazil) and junior
forward Janae Voelker (Newton, Kan.), the Oral Roberts
women's basketball team picked up a 78-71 victory over IPFW Monday
evening in the Mabee Center.
The Golden Eagles improve to 9-7 on the season and 2-3 in Summit
League action, while the Mastodons fall to 2-14 overall and 1-5 in
conference play. ORU is also now 4-0 all-time against IPFW.
Camargo and Voelker led ORU with 21 points apiece, while freshman
guard Georgia Jones (Manchester, England) scored 19
points to go along with a game-high six assists. Voelker and
freshman forward Jordan Pyle (Mustang, Okla.) led the team with
seven rebounds each.
The Golden Eagles started out the first half on a 10-2 run, with
four points from Voelker in the first three minutes of the game.
Camargo kept the lead alive on a lay-up, 14-7, with 15:28 left to
play. Two Courtney Reed three-pointers brought IPFW back to within
one-point, 13-14, at 13:26, while Camargo, Voelker and Jones
combined for the next 10 Golden Eagle points in the next six
minutes of action.
Camargo gave ORU its first double-digit lead of the game on a
lay-up, 33-23, with 2:19 left in the half and Voelker kept it at
double-digits on a jumper, 35-25, at the one-minute mark. The
Golden Eagles took a 37-31 lead heading into the break, as IPFW
grabbed its eighth three-point field goal with 18 seconds
remaining.
The Mastodons took a 7-2 run in the beginning of the second half
and then tied it for the first of four times with 17:05 to go.
After the fourth tie of the game, Jones sparked the offense with a
three-pointer, as Camargo and Voelker followed suit with two
lay-ups to give ORU a 55-48 lead with 11:19 left in the game.
Six IPFW free throws cut the lead to within one, 54-55, at the
8:18 mark, as Jones and Voelker led the ORU offense and put the
Golden Eagles up 64-56 with 6:24 remaining. IPFW's Sarah Haluska
brought it back to within a one possession game on three-pointer
with 3:24 to play, 63-66, while one lay-up from Camargo and one
from senior guard Demesha Heard (Oklahoma City, Okla.) brought the
Golden Eagles back up, 70-63, with 2:07 to go. ORU finished out the
second half making eight of 12 free throws in the last minute and a
half to capture the victory.
The Golden Eagles shot 52.5 percent (32-61) from field goal range,
including 50.0 percent (4-8) from three-point range and 58.8
percent (10-17) from the free throw line.
IPFW out-rebounded ORU, 39-33, and had 10 more free throws, as ORU
committed 23 fouls compared to IPFW's 15.
The Mastodon's shot 34.5 percent (20-58) from the field, including
28.9 percent (11-38) from behind the arc and 76.9 percent (20-26)
from behind the charity stripe.
ORU heads out on the road next weekend, facing Western Illinois on
Saturday, Jan. 17 at 4:30 p.m. before battling IUPUI on Monday,
Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
