All-Time Results Versus Sam Houston State
ORU and Sam Houston State will meet for the fourth time in the
all-time series, as the Golden Eagles hold a 2-1 advantage over the
Bearkats. ORU posted an 83-41 victory over Sam Houston State last
season in the Mabee Center, as four Golden Eagles scored in double
figures, led by Janae Voelker's 15 points and 15 rebounds. ORU
dropped its only meeting in Huntsville on Dec. 18, 2005 by 42
points, while registering a 62-49 victory in the only other contest
between the two schools in Tulsa during the 1994-95 season.
Recapping the Houston Baptist Game
The Golden Eagles kicked off their three-game road trip on
Saturday with a 107-67 victory over Houston Baptist at Sharp Gym in
Houston. Kevi Luper led ORU with 28 points, nine steals and eight
rebounds for a near triple-double. Jaci Bigham and Jordan Pyle each
scored 15 points apiece, while Janae Voelker extended her
double-figure scoring streak to 44 games with 11 points. Freshman
Alex Adekunle posted her first double-figure scoring performance
with 10 points in 13 minutes of play. The Golden Eagles shot 51
percent from the field (41-of-80), while holding the Huskies to 36
percent shooting (25-of-70). ORU also forced 41 turnovers and 26
steals.
Luper Named Summit League Player of the Week
Freshman Kevi Luper was named the Summit League Women's Basketball
Player of the Week for the second consecutive time on Nov. 24.
Luper is only the second Golden Eagle to earn the honor two
straight weeks, as Alicia Turkek also achieved the feat during the
2006-07 season. In her first two collegiate contests, Luper
averaged 24.5 points, 3.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds. Luper went
17-of-33 from the field (.515), 4-of-11 from three-point range
(.364) and 11-13 from the free-throw line (.846). Luper went for 25
points, five steals and three assists in 25 minutes of play in
ORU's 98-65 season-opening victory over UT-Pan American on Nov. 13.
The Strang, Okla., native went 9-of-13 from the field and 6-of-7
from the charity stripe in the win. On Nov. 15, Luper scored 24
points and pulled down four rebounds as the Golden Eagles fell
short at No. 20 Kansas. Luper tallied eight field goals, including
three treys, and went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Luper earned
her second honor after setting a Summit League single-game record
with 44 points and 19 field goals, while also pulling down 14
boards in ORU's 76-55 win over LaSalle on Nov. 20.
Voelker Continues Scoring Streak
Senior Janae Voelker entered the 2009-10 season having posted
double-digit scoring performances in 40 consecutive contests, and
has extended that streak to 44 games this season. Voelker posted 10
points in the season opener against UT-Pan American, and tallied a
career-high 29 points at No. 20 Kansas. Voelker scored 10 and 11
points in the last two contest against La Salle and Houston
Baptist, respectively. Voelker began the streak by scoring 22
points against Oakland on February 11, 2008. The Newton, Kan.,
native scored at least 10 points in the final 10 games of the
2007-08 season and achieved the feat in all 30 of last season's
contests.
Early and Often
The Golden Eagles' new up-tempo style offense has been evident
through the first four games this season, as ORU is averaging 90.2
points per contest. In the season opener against UT-Pan American,
the Golden Eagles put up 98 points, including 24 points off of
three-pointers. ORU tallied 80 points in a losing effort two days
later at No. 20 Kansas, including seven three-point field goals.
The Golden Eagles scored 76 points, including a Summit League
-record 44 points from Kevi Luper, in a victory against La Salle on
Nov. 20, and added a season-high 107 points against Houston Baptist
on Saturday. Luper, a freshman from Strang, Okla., has led the ORU
scoring attack by averaging 30.3 points through the first four
games. Janae Voelker tallied a career-high 29 points at Kansas and
averagest 15.0 points per game, while Jordan Pyle put up a
career-high 22 points against UT-Pan American and averages 10.8
points per game. Jaci Bigham, a freshman from McAlester, Okla., is
third on the squad with 12.5 points per game and leads the team
with 5.5 assists per contest. If the Golden Eagles continue their
high-scoring ways this season, they could be on their way to
breaking the school record for points per game, which was 81.2, set
during the 1982-83 season. The 1982-83 squad is the only team in
ORU history to average more than 80 points per contest. The most
points an ORU team led by Jerry Finkbeiner has averaged is 68.0
during the 2005-06 season.
