Luper posted a double-double as the Oral Roberts University
women's basketball team dominated Southern Utah by a score of
109-62 in their Summit League opener on Saturday at the Mabee
Center.
The Golden Eagles (5-2, 1-0) posted their first-ever 100-point game
against a Summit League opponent, while knocking down a
school-record 17 3-pointers. The previous record of 15 treys set in
2006 was shattered at the 5:16 mark when
Kelly Kindell
(Schulter, Okla.) hit her first 3-pointer of the season. Kindell
would knock down the team's 17th trey in the next possession.
The 17 3-pointers also tied a league record and surpassed the
previous mark in conference action set by South Dakota State last
season.
Luper paced the Golden Eagles with 30 points off 9-of-14 shooting
from the field, 3-of-6 from 3-point range and 9-of-12 from the
free-throw line, while snagging a school-record 12 steals. Luper
broke the previous record of 10 at the 10:30 mark in the second
half. Luper tied the conference record for steals in a league game,
which has stood for 14 years.
Georgia Jones (Manchester,
England) tallied a season-high 18 points and tied a career-high
with six 3-pointers in seven attempts. Jones orchestrated ORU's
first-half barrage, knocking down five of the team's 11 3-pointers
in the opening frame.
Janae Voelker (Newton, Kan.)
also posted 18 points in the win, tying a career-high with four
treys in five attempts. The senior extended her double-figure
scoring streak to 47 consecutive contests.
Jordan Pyle (Mustang, Okla.)
added seven points and a team-high nine rebounds, while
Savanna Buck
(Pinehurst, Texas) tied a career high with nine points and Jaci
Bigham (McAlester, Okla.) chipped in six points and handed out
six assists.
Caitlyn Sears led Southern Utah (1-7, 0-1) with 17 points, while
Chanel Thorley added 15 points and Challis Pascucci grabbed a
team-high 10 boards.
The Golden Eagles forced 26 steals, which ranks second in Summit
League history for conference games, and 38 turnovers.
ORU shot 51 percent (36-of-71) from the field, 59 percent
(17-of-29) from 3-point range and 61 percent (20-of-33) from the
charity stripe.
The Golden Eagles continue Summit League play against UMKC at 7:05
on Monday at the Mabee Center.
