Late Rally Lifts IUPUI Past ORU Women, 62-57

TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts women's basketball team fell, 57-62, against IUPUI Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center in the Golden Eagles Pink Zone Event.

ORU falls to 11-13 on the year and 4-9 in Summit League action, while IUPUI improves to 13-12 overall and 8-6 in conference play. The Jaguars won both games this season over ORU but the Golden Eagles still hold a 12-11 all-time advantage.

The Golden Eagles had a quartet of players score in double-figures on the afternoon, while three players fouled out. Junior forward Janae Voelker (Newton, Kan.) led the team with 13 points, as she grabbed five rebounds before fouling out. Senior guard Mariana Camargo (Blumenau, Brazil) and freshman forward Cristal Turner (Maidstone, England) both chipped in 11 points, while freshman guard Georgia Jones scored 10 points and added four assists. Senior center Monah Pegorari (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added a team-high 11 boards for her third-straight double-figure rebounding game.

Voelker started off the game for ORU with six points in the first four minutes of action, while a three-pointer from Turner kept the Golden Eagles up 9-4 at the 15-minute mark. Two Camargo free throws and another three from Turner gave ORU a 14-7 lead with 13:46 remaining in the first half before IUPUI responded with a 7-1 run in the next three minutes of action to come within one-point.

The Golden Eagles then took a 4-0 run to go up by five, 19-14, with 10:21 to play, while the Jaguars fought back with another 4-0 run to come with one-point again at the eight-minute mark. ORU continued to lead through the rest of the first half, going up by as much as six, 28-22, with 3:15 to play. IUPUI scored its last bucket of the first half at 2:57 to take it back to a one-possession game, as Camargo made a free throw in the last four seconds of action, giving the Golden Eagles a 29-25 lead heading into the break.

Four points from IUPUI's Julia Whitted in the first three minutes in the second half, quickly tied the score at 29-all. Two free throws from Turner kept ORU up by two but a three-pointer from Kiera Butler at 16:49 gave IUPUI its first lead of the game, 32-31. The Golden Eagles then went on a 14-3 run in the next five minutes of action to take its first double-digit lead of the game, 45-34, with 11:07 remaining. The Jaguars slowly clawed away at the lead, cutting it down to four, 43-47, with 7:57 to go.

Another ORU 6-0 run kept the team up by nine with 3:35 to play, 53-44, while two Jones free throws kept the nine-point lead, 55-46, with 1:59 to go. A minute later IUPUI tied it up at 55-55 and a Butler layup put the Jags up 57-55 and five free throws from IUPUI iced the game.

ORU shot 38.8 percent (19-49) from the field, including 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range and 63.6 percent (14-22) from the free throw line.

IUPUI out-rebounded ORU 40-37, while the Golden Eagles committed 21 turnovers compared to the Jaguars 14.

The Jaguars shot 35.6 percent (21-59) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-16) from behind the arc and 57.7 percent (15-26) from the charity stripe.

The Golden Eagles continue action at home on Monday, Feb. 16, hosting Western Illinois at 7:05 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
